Complete guide to the India immigration process. Airport arrival steps, immigration counters, IeAC submission, customs declaration, and tips for a smooth entry.
Upon landing at Indira Gandhi International Airport (DEL), follow signs to Immigration/Passport Control. The process typically involves several stages: disembarkation, immigration screening, baggage claim, and customs clearance. Have your passport and IeAC confirmation ready before joining the queue. Separate lanes are available for India citizens and foreign passport holders.
At the immigration counter, present your passport and IeAC confirmation to the officer. They will verify your identity, check your visa status or visa-free eligibility, and may ask questions about your purpose of visit, accommodation, and return plans. Biometric data (fingerprints and photograph) may be collected. The officer will stamp your passport with the entry date and permitted stay duration. This process typically takes 2-5 minutes per traveler.
The IeAC is verified electronically during immigration processing. If you've completed it online through our platform, the officer can retrieve your details digitally. Keep your confirmation email or printed copy accessible as backup. Travelers without a completed IeAC may be directed to a separate processing area, resulting in significant delays.
After collecting your baggage, proceed through customs. India operates a dual-channel system: Green Channel (nothing to declare) for travelers within duty-free allowances, and Red Channel for those carrying declarable items. Items requiring declaration include: currency exceeding USD 10,000, commercial goods, certain food products, prescription medications in large quantities, and restricted items. Random inspections may occur in either channel.
For the smoothest possible entry into India: (1) Complete your IeAC at least 72 hours before departure. (2) Have all documents organized and easily accessible. (3) Know your accommodation address and phone number. (4) Carry proof of return/onward travel. (5) Have sufficient funds or credit cards ready to show. (6) Be honest and direct when answering immigration officers' questions. (7) Allow extra time during peak travel seasons and holidays.
